School nurses who worked in elementary, junior high, and high schools of A Prefecture were investigated, and a questionnaire survey was conducted on their competent consciousness and self-education ability.\n The results of a variance analysis showed that nurses with 3-5 years of experience showed a significantly higher competent consciousness than nurses with either 1-2 years or more than 6 years’ experience. It was suggested that a plateau phenomenon has occurred for nurses with more than 6 years’ experience. The results obtained by comparing the high and low competent consciousness groups of nurses showed that the level of self-education ability was related to the level of competent consciousness.
