| 内容記述 | The Dean's December depicts the life of Corde, a university dean and the protagonist of Bellow's novel, both in Rumania and Chicago. He is suffering from a variety of troubles. Most of the troubles stem from distortion of the truth. Corde goes to Rumania in order to visit his mother-in-law, who is in hospital. In Rumania little news and information are circulated by the media, which are tightly controlled by the authorities. In such a situation Corde finds difficulty in gathering reliable information about the country. On the other hand in Chicago, where he works, there is an excess of information. Therefore he has trouble discerning what is reliable or relevant. On one occasion Corde is criticized, because the content of his column in a magazine is thought to be distorted. In another case, he is accused of having prejudiced views of a suspect in a murder case. Corde, who is worried about such problems, is himself the target of a maliciously distorted article. He is eventually forced to leave the post of dean because of the influence of this article. In this essay I discuss the way distortions of the truth affect Corde, and analyze the difficulties he encounters. In my discussion I will show the causes and effects of distortion, and how such distortion affects the relationships in which he is involved. | |||||
