内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This paper looks briefly at what has been ignored for far too long in language teaching in Japan, the teaching of the listening skill. First of all, it gives a definition of listening. Listening is a thinking process, and thinking is an active process. Therefore, listening is an active process. Since listening is an active process and not the passive process that most people believe it to be, a new definition of listening in terms of what strategies must be employed to make the best of what one hears is discussed. Then, this paper examines active listening strategies and learning styles. Teachers must learn to help students to develop listening skills in terms of listening strategies. These listening strategies are then compared to various learning styles and learning needs that students have. Teachers are shown how to utilize these strategies and learning styles in preparing and teaching classroom lessons. The paper goes on to outline several principles for fostering active listening strategies in our students. These principles include attention to accuracy and analysis of form, accurate comprehension, learning new and important content in the target language, and face to face interaction. There are certain types of strategies that can be employed for all of theses principles. However, each of the principles involves certain types of actions that are specific to the principle. Teachers need to be aware of what principle they are using when they teach listening strategies. Finally, there is a discussion of teaching procedures with suggestions for classroom activities and some ideas on how to tailor activities to fit specific situations. Many of these ideas are familiar to teachers, but they include a way to focus them primarily toward the listening skill. Other ideas are new, and are used exclusively with the listening skill. Finally, it is necessary to remember that our students have spent six years learning grammar. It will probably take them another six years to learn listening and sneaking.
