内容記述 | At the beginning of The Prelude, it is described that "The Prelude or, growth of a poet's mind, an autobiographical poem". But I think it is not a "confessional poem". Its subject is his personal subjectivity, and he represents the growth of his consciouness in it. The Prelude concerns itself with individual memory, and the memory in childhood endows the landscape with excess values because it had formerly seemed or been made to seem so threatening. Therefore, through time, two extremes of negative and positive evaluation combine to produce a kind of balance. In short, the pain of one perception is answered by subsequent pleasure, and the pleasure itself is tempered by the memory of pain. As for the "spots of time", each spots of time takes the form of a struggle toward difinition, so the poem as a whole reveals a struggle to be unified and complete; and the rhetoric of this poem often gives us the illusion that his definitions are complete, so these repeated definitions throughout the poem convince us that he has completed a larger experience. The good example of these repeated definitions is about the description of glittering waters like mirror. Mirror generally reflects a kind of truth which he has not seen in his usual situation of childhood. As he grows the unseen truth reveals its form in front of his eyes. Wordsworth calls this moment which the truth appears itself "spots of time". He is sure that we can see what is beyond the visible landscape only by feeling the moment of "spots of time". The Prelude presents a whole range of formulations of the mind-world relation, varying from active mind (and passive nature) to active nature (and passive mind), with consequent variation in the real world. Eventually, the persistent theme of The Prelude is the power of the poet' s mind over the universe it inhabits. Wordsworth believed this power belongs to poet's imagination, so he feared the loss of his own imagination. His theme is the tempering of imagination by nature, an educational process that leads to renovation. | |||||
