内容記述 | This paper looks at the teaching of the speaking skill to Japanese university level learners. Learning the speaking skill of a language is especially difficult for these learners for many reasons. First, they must learn to use a functional grammar, then they need be made aware of paralinguistic and elements which vary cross-culturally. Furthermore, different cultural assumptions about the purposes of particular interactions and expected outcomes of encounters also affect communication. Japanese EFL learners have minimal exposure to English and minimal contact with native speakers. As a result they are, in general, relative poor at spoken English. This is especially true with regard to fluency, control of idiomatic expressions, and understand of cultural pragmatics. Japanese learners need explicit instruction and practice in the speaking skill area. Corrective feedback should be an integral part of the communicative activities in order to minimize the fossilization effect. | |||||
